I love this framing and it so true. You also touch on something I almost included and left on the cutting room floor—they are willing to accept that it’s natural up until you commit the act. Let your light out of the bushel unless it’s rainbow colored because no one wants to see that. What utter codswallop.
We have been around since the beginning of time, and no amount of wishful thinking or biblical twisting will unwrite that historical fact.
Coming from you whose own work with @Nick Paro on the period of Christian Nationalism and the mountain mandate this means something extra special to me. In another time and place I would steer clear of this but listening to you speak with Nick about your experiences gave me the courage.
Too often does the fear of being noticed and seen in a religious space make me silent, for fear that my expression of faith might be condemned simply because of who I love.
As the Firebird Budd reminds us, just like you and Nick do every day—we are all gods children and we all get to put our pictures on the fridge no matter what they look like or what we draw them with.
We are all loved and valued and called to care and love for others.
Yes. I spent much of my life “being obedient,” and now worry that calling out the heresy of White Christian Nationalism will seem disingenuous and “like I have an ax go grind.”
No. I am even officially “obedient” now (though not because I believe I should be celibate - I am too tired to be in a relationship) - I naively believed our country’s structure would protect us. Now that it is obvious it might not, I am going to do my best to make sure people realize that either a) they are being misled by their church leadership/Christian radio/etc., or b) there are (still) some well meaning people out there who are being homeschooled into believing our country is being “returned” to values that it never had, and purposely chose NOT to enshrine in law because of the dangers inherent in it.
Mostly getting like-minded people, but maybe they will find people who are misled and help them see a better way.
Thank you! I’m looking at the stat in comparison to usual and it looks like I may have missed my momentum by missing the drop window. Way below where we usually are and I thought this was some of my best. To hear it stiffened the resolve of one makes the hours worthwhile. Thank you for reading Aurelia, I’m honored.
Sweet Tea. So innately in tune with the ancient words while forging ahead in the present with equally beautiful and important work. I am so thankful for you.
Thank you Wendy! I always strive for that line between a more formal old dialect in a way that addresses the issues of today. I am so glad this one did that. I was trying to work in a Firebird and the main point and it came out beautifully—though perhaps a touch poetic for a formal essay on the subject. Never the less, the next installment should make up for any poetic leanings here. We will be diving into the case law pertaining to gay marriage. Fun stuff! At least we have made some monumental progress compared to my fore bearers in this topic.
No fair making me weep! ❤️
So well put.

No matter who they worship.

Me too 🫂
This has strengthened my resolve and stiffened my spine. I am called to resist, and resist I shall!
